Re: Calling a district Union free when it has a union
Posted by Not even close on 5/14/08

I didn't think that providing the definition for union free
school district would set off such a torrent of anger. I did not
take part in any of the ensuing bashing, but let me reiterate:
union free is not the same as union-free, if that helps. In 1812
New York set up "common school districts." In 1853 the
legislature authorized "union free districts" so that smaller
districts could join to operate high schools. The tuition was
free. In 1914 they created "central school districts," which
could combine common and union free districts. This is currently
the most common form of organization of districts in the state.
I've worked in a UFSD, a CSD, and now for the NYCDOE. I've
always been represented by a union, and the terms of my
employment have been governed by a negotiated contract-
otherwise I would never have accepted the jobs.

I didn't attack anyone, or name call, but if anyone feels the
need to lash out, well, have at it.
